Border(less)
I employed Generative AI to create hybrid typefaces by blending Hangul and the English alphabet, producing meaningful words like 경계 (border), 공간 (space), and 세계 (world). Drawing inspiration from the Cheonhado (천하도)—a circular world map conceived in Korea during the 17th century—Park reinterpreted this ancient Korean map to accentuate the imaginative tales inherent in cartography. The Generative AI assisted me in envisioning fictional locales, which I then represented using these newly minted hybrid characters. Though "Cheonhado" translates to "Complete map of the world beneath the heavens," it embodies the imaginative essence of map-making and the cartographer's worldview. My redesigned Cheonhado is overlaid with Korean words, underscoring the multifaceted implications of cartographic perspectives and the human touch in inventing narratives.
In the Map of the World series, I intertwine MY mapping practice with bilingual and multicultural dimensions, creating a confluence where ancient materials and modern machine learning seamlessly intersect. This synergy illuminates an interplay between the East and the West, as well as the old and new embodying a diverse fusion of experiences and processes in each artistic representation.
