Home Home emerges from a personal quest to understand and articulate the multifaceted concept of 'home'—a notion that transcends mere physical space to encompass comfort, security, identity, origin, and cultural heritage. This project is my canvas for exploring the intricate tapestry of emotions, memories, and cultural imprints that shape my perception of home.
In this body of work, I have melded the art of printmaking, specifically lithography, with traditional Korean techniques and materials to delve into my Korean heritage and its intertwining with the idea of home. My joomchi pieces are not just crafted; they are woven narratives, each embedding images and symbols that resonate with my own understanding of home. These elements range from depictions of childhood abodes to representations of historical events, domestic artifacts, personal belongings, and cherished mementos.
The process begins with printing these meaningful images onto hanji, traditional Korean paper known for its durability and texture. I then engage in a process of tearing and layering these prints, combining them with additional sheets of hanji. Through various techniques of agitation and wet-felting, these layers are merged into a singular, cohesive fabric. This method is both a physical and symbolic act of blending memories and materiality into a new form.
The resulting joomchi paper is rich in texture and meaning—a testament to resilience, imbued with layers of personal and cultural history. These prints and paperworks are more than artistic expressions; they are invitations for viewers to embark on a reflective journey into their own definitions of home and belonging. By employing materials that are deeply personal and culturally significant, I aim to establish a connection with the viewer, fostering an intimate space for exploration and understanding.
