Narratives and Imagination

Inspired by works of literature. I created these drawings employing an intuitive mark-making process. Without a predetermined end, I followed my stream of imagination and curiosity. The work of literature that particularly influenced these drawings were the novels by Haruki Murakami, the Japnese master of eccentric and whimsical writing. My pictures suggest dreamlike landscapes and surreal imaginaries in which the boundaries between a dream and a reality collapse, and the realms of the normal and the abnormal become entangled. In addition to the stylistic musical elements and sensibilities which paint his novels in a unique color, I intended to express the desire to seek the otherworld riddled with pandemonium, feverish adventure, and a sense of loss through my language of improvised abstractions. Rather than merely translating the inspirational source, I envisioned original and imaginative narratives that explore space and forms, stimulating our curious minds.
